Nia J.
Private tutor in Yakima, WA
Education
I just completed my DPT from the University of Puget Sound and am completing my final internship. I hold a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science/Kinesiology, with dual minors in Music and Spanish. In pursuing these degrees I have had extensive experience in the processes of application and acceptance into undergraduate and graduate degree programs and understand the level of preparation required to achieve academic goals. I also understand that sometimes all it takes is a little bit of a push or a different style of explanation to help a student reach his/her full potential. As a future physical therapist, my most recent studies have been in the areas of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, and therapeutic exercise, however prerequisites to this coursework included extensive math, chemistry, physics, and nutrition. Writing fluency and efficiency has been emphasized throughout my education, and the ability to write well sets applicants apart on applications of all levels. I would like to be involved in the process of helping students achieve their academic goals.
Experience
I want to be a tutor because I believe that learning how to be successful in school is the foundation for being successful in life, and I want to help others reach their full potential. I have tutored peers and younger students since Middle School in a variety of subjects, and I find it both enjoyable and rewarding. Relevant work experience includes interning in PT clinics last summer and practicing in the UPS onsite clinic for two semesters. During the summers of my undergraduate education I worked as a horseback riding instructor and counselor at Girl Scout Camp Whispering Winds for three years. I then worked as a trail ride guide and wrangler at Sun Mountain Lodge for two years during the summers after my senior year and first year in PT school, so I have experience teaching adults and children of all ages.

Hobbies
Working with horses is my greatest passion in life. I have chosen to pursue Physical Therapy so that I can pursue an additional certification in Hippotherapy and work with horses to help rehabilitate people. I am most happy when I am outside hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, camping, or going to the barn, but every now and then it can be fun to stay at home and read a good book or go blues or swing dancing with my friends. Please note that from January-March 2016 I will be interning at St. Peter's Hospital in Olympia, so I would be potentially able to meet with students in Olympia and Tacoma during that time.
